Abstract
Increasing demand for new applications, major technology innovation (especially related to optical components), and rapidly changing economics are motivating the creation of fundamentally new digital communication services and architecture. Meeting the many challenges of emerging requirements, especially for data intensive science research applications, requires replacing traditional infrastructure with one that provides not only for massive additional capacity, especially within core networks, but also for highly programmable network resources, including end-to-end paths for some individual applications and services.
