Abstract
Gert is 102, a happy survivor of one of society's unhappiest institutions: a nursing home. While others barely survive emotionally, Gert maintains her charm and her spirit. She's been a feisty, independent lady all her life. Widowed at 48, she never wanted to marry again. Quick to laugh, stubborn, and assertive, Gert still enjoys her periodic trips to the racetrack. Her mind is sharp as a pin. When she entered the home seventeen years earlier, many of the residents were veterans who had infirmities but basically had their wits in tact. Now, sadly, the population has changed, and all too many are victims of Alzheimer's, or other mental disabilities. This is a very realistic picture of emotional survival in an environment that has to be very trying for a rational person.
