Abstract
Eugene O’Neill’s nostalgic paean to the rites of adolescence is also an idealized version of the boyhood and warm family life O’Neill never had. The affectionate comedy—set against a backdrop of turn-of-the century Fourth of July picnics and fireworks—presents a young man’s coming of age during a summer in which he experiments with his first romantic crush, poetry, politics, wicked women, and booze. The Village Voice wrote: “A superb Long Wharf Theatre Company demonstrates the beauty, intimacy and good humor of Eugene O’Neill’s nostalgic comedy of an adolescent boy growing up in New England in the days of America’s innocence.” John J. O’Connor in The New York Times wrote: “With sustained intelligence and sensitivity, the Long Wharf and its artistic director, Arvin Brown, have wrought something of a miracle with ‘Ah, Wilderness!’
