Abstract
Providing a rare inside look into the organizational and psychological dynamics of liberation movements in general and the African National Congress in particular, this documentary tells the stories of 12 South Africans who helped to topple the apartheid regime. The film offers a concise overview of the sometimes controversial ANC’s struggle—it touches on the Defiance Campaign, the Sharpeville massacre, the arrest of Nelson Mandela, the Soweto uprising, the State of Emergency, and Mandela’s eventual release—while exploring the painful trade-offs between public and private lives that the activists and their families experience.
