Abstract
With the whole world now interconnected, speaking English is commonly seen as a fast track to a good future. Students in Beijing spend Friday evenings practicing the lingo at “English corners,” and employees of a Bangalore call center work on neutralizing their Indian accents. But in many countries there’s concern about a growing divide between those who speak English—a well-off, Europeanized middle class—and those who don’t. Not only are socioeconomic barriers erected by its use, but the infiltration of English, some feel, weakens their cultural identity. This program documents the unparalleled success of English while challenging viewers to consider the downside of its spread. Produced by the Open University. Part 2 of the series Worlds of English.
