Abstract
Two and a half millennia ago, a new religion was born in Asia, generated from the ideas of Siddhartha Gautama, a mysterious Indian sage who gained enlightenment while he sat under a fig tree and became known as Buddha—the awakened one. The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth, only that he was a human being who had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. This engaging documentary by Emmy Award–winning filmmaker David Grubin tells the story of the Buddha’s life, drawing upon ancient paintings and sculptures as well as scenes in India today that echo the Buddha’s world of long ago. The testimony of contemporary Buddhists, including Pulitzer Prize—winning poet W. S. Merwin and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, provide insight into the ancient narrative.
