IGNITE Sessions - Pinterest! For Student Collaborative Projects by Denise Krieger and Steve Garwood
Abstract
Incorporating collaborative projects that utilize social media can provide an innovative approach to actively engage students in learning. The presenters at the School of Communication & Information at Rutgers University will discuss two pilots implemented in online courses in Spring 2013 that incorporated collaborative projects using Pinterest!, a visually-oriented social media tool. Students worked in small groups to create unique Pinterest boards related to library and information science (graduates) and journalism and media studies (undergraduates). The presenters will share the background, process and considerations, and results of this successful project to create an authentic learning opportunity for students. Denise Kreiger is the Instructional Design and Technology Specialist at the School of Information and Communication (SC&I), Rutgers University and and has worked over eight years in higher education with extensive experience in the field of instructional design and technology. At SC&I, she supports faculty in designing, developing, and teaching classroom-based, web-enhanced, hybrid, and fully online courses using learning management systems and instructional technology based on sound pedagogical practices. Before joining Rutgers, Denise was an instructional design and technology specialist at Monmouth University and Mercer County Community College. She is a certified peer reviewer in Quality Matters for the design of quality online courses and has developed and facilitated Virtual Online and Hybrid Teaching Certification programs for faculty. She also worked in K-12 schools as a school library media specialist and English/language arts teacher. She possesses a Master of Education (M.Ed.) with NJ teaching certifications in Associate Educational Media Specialist, English, and Elementary Education. She has also worked in the corporate and consulting sector in elearning, instructional design, training and development, and performance support. Steve Garwood is the Director of Instructional Design and Technology Services at School of Communication and Information (SC&I), Rutgers University and has worked over ten years in the field of instructional design and technology in higher education. Before becoming Assistant Dean, Steve was Director of Instructional Design and Technology Services at SC&I, an instructional technology specialist at SC&I, an instructor in the Library and Information Science Department at SC&I, and also librarian-related positions at Princeton University, INFOLINK, Camden County Library, and Burlington County Library. He possesses a Masters in Communication and Information Studies (MCIS), a Masters in Library Service (MLS), and is currently pursuing a doctorate in the Ed. D. program at Rutgers University.
