Abstract
Assignment: Sports Story
Class: SLS 3810: ASL Registers
Fall 2012
Instructor: Sharon Meldrum
Duration: 3:28
Description:
For this assignment, we first learned vocabulary related to a variety of sports. After learning this vocabulary, each student made up and signed a story using some of that vocabulary. This is a story about the top home run hitters in Major League baseball, and how steroids have impacted power hitting in baseball.
Reflection:
This was a fun assignment. When I took ASL Registers, I felt confident about my ASL skills. I was also very comfortable with the topic, because I enjoy some sports. It was difficult to make up a fictional story using sports vocabulary, so I decided to use some of the sports vocabulary in a story about sports history.
That is one area where I believe that I have improved since my first sign language class at Madonna University. I am still not as skilled as other people, but my ability to make up stories for assignments improved dramatically since my first sign language class.
One area where I felt that I did well in this video was the uses of passive hand reference and point of reference. Since I was discussing two groups of baseball players (past and present players) in this presentation, I knew that I had to find a way to distinguish between those two groups. I thought that it made sense to use point of reference for the players who played most recently, because they could be present to use indexing. Since one of the players from the distant past is no longer alive, I thought that it made more sense to use passive hand reference.
This demonstrated that I have learned to apply some of my knowledge to situations that might come up in the use of ASL.
Being comfortable with the vocabulary, the topic, and my signing skills made this an interesting and fun assignment.
