Reflection:
This was an interesting assignment to me. I learned the Pledge of Allegiance at a young age. I attended a private school, where we recited the Pledge of Allegiance three times every week during chapel services. In this class, I was able to use my knowledge of ASL to interpret the Pledge of Allegiance. In class, we learned one way to sign it. On my own, I watched other versions, some learning more toward English, others leaning more toward pure ASL. It was fun to study the different ways to sign the Pledge of Allegiance and put into practice what I learned.
I felt confident about this video because I had grown up reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. For me, this assignment was more about exploring the different ways it could be signed and selecting the one That made me most comfortable.
My strongest point was in choosing certain ASL signs to represent certain concepts. I watched other versions of the Pledge where the signers signed “One nation ‘under’ God.” While it is true that, physically, we are under God, I felt that the more conceptually accurate sign was that the nation is connected to God.
My weakest point was that I should have stood slightly moved back from the camera slightly. It seemed as though some signs tended to disappear above the view of the camera.
