Abstract
Assignment: Eye Pupils
Course: SLS 3810, ASL Registers
Fall 2012
Instructor: Sharon Meldrum
Duration: 1:30
Summary
For this assignment, the class divided in to groups. Each group watched a different video of a person signing to describe how something works. Each group translated the video into English. Lastly, each person signed the story in ASL.
This story is about how eye pupils function. Eye pupils contract or dilate to let in the appropriate amount of light. This process is compared to night vision goggles that allow military personnel to see at night.
Reflection
This assignment relied heavily on the use of classifiers in the sign space, a concept that was initially very difficult for me, as I demonstrate in the Ball Story.
When this assignment was introduced, I thought that there was no way I would be able to both learn and sign this story. The heavy use of classifiers was very intimidating.
As I moved forward in my education, I learned more about how to use classifiers in the sign space to show who/what is involved and what those people or things are doing. As I moved along in this assignment, I became more comfortable with both the material and classifiers in general.
This assignment taught me more about how important classifiers are in ASL. They are used to show many different types of objects and motions of those objects. By the time I signed this presentation, I feel that I had a better understanding of classifiers than when I started to learn about them. This will be important in my dealings with Deaf people in and out of the professional world, because classifiers are important for producing true American Sign Language.
