Abstract
Assignment: Lord’s Prayer
Class: SLS 3810 ASL Registers,
fall 2012
Instructor: Sharon Meldrum
Duration: 0:35
Summary
This assignment consisted of two parts. First, we learned vocabulary relation to religion. For the second part, we learned the Lord’s Prayer. In this video, I sign the Lord’s Prayer.
Reflection
I felt confident about my ASL skills in this video. I was very familiar with the Prayer itself, because I had recited it many times in school and in church services.
My strongest point in this video was learning the material. I knew the prayer itself because I had recited it many times in church services and in school. I had also learned a signed version of the Lord’s Prayer.
My weakest point in this video is signing “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Looking back, I believe that I should have slowed down slightly.
Through studying the Lord’s Prayer for this class I learned that it can be signed in various ways. After learning one way in class, it was interesting to use personal study time to observe some of the other ways to sign the Lord’s Prayer.
This was an interesting assignment, because it made me aware of some of the different ways that this prayer may be signed. In addition to the variations between ASL and English, I learned that Catholics and Protestants tend to sign amen differently. This was significant because it made me aware of the fact that, in religious settings, I must be aware of variations in signs across different Christian denominations and different religions.
