Abstract
Assignment: How I plan to use my SLS degree and Addiction Studies certificate
Class: SLS 4950 Senior Seminar
Winter 2014
Instructor: Daniel McDougall
Duration: 4:20
Description: I am majoring in Sign Language Studies, with a focus on Deaf Studies, and pursuing a certificate in Addiction Studies. In this video, I will explain how I want to combine those programs into a career.
Reflection:
This project required knowledge in two main areas – addiction and signs related to addiction. It was important to understand how the process of addiction impacts the lives of the addict and the people around the addict. It was also important to understand what work needs to be done in the Deaf community related to addiction.
Addiction is a process that begins with experimentation and progresses through stages until an individual is an addict. This can occur with substances or processes. Anyone can become addicted. Deaf people are no exception.
This project was interesting because it gave me a chance to begin the process of trying to make information about addiction more accessible to Deaf people. In the future, I hope that I will be able to use my knowledge from the Sign Language Studies and Addiction Studies programs to effectively treat Deaf addicts. I also hope to research what Deaf people tend to become addicted to, because currently, very little, if any data exists regarding addiction in the Deaf community.
It also made me start to think about how I will approach the idea of researching addiction within the Deaf community. First, I have to try to find out what Deaf people tend to be addicted to, because that could impact the treatment approach. Next, I have to figure out the best ways to work with Deaf people who are struggling with addiction.
I felt confident about my ASL skills when I signed this presentation, because I had previously taken several Addiction Studies courses. Throughout my education in that program, I thought about how I would combine these two programs to benefit the lives of Deaf addicts. This gave me time to prepare.
