Abstract
Assignment: What I learned in the Addiction Studies program
Class: SLS 4950 Senior Seminar
Winter 2014
Instructor: Daniel McDougall
Duration: 5:32
Description:
In this video, I briefly describe what I learned in the Addiction Studies program at Madonna University.
Reflection:
This was an interesting presentation to perform for several reasons. First, it gave me the opportunity to recall what I learned about addiction in a setting other than an Addiction Studies class, and see how much I had actually learned. Second, this assignment gave me the opportunity to begin the process of figuring out how to make some of this information more accessible to Deaf people by translating it into ASL. Third, this project made me think about the types of things I want to research related to addiction within the Deaf community. Based on what I know about the different types of addictions, I have formulated hypotheses related to the research I hope to conduct. I hope to work on finding answers to questions about what Deaf people are addicted to and how addiction for a Deaf person is similar to and different from addiction for a hearing person.
Additionally, this project gave me the opportunity to think about how I will use my knowledge from the addiction studies program to work with the Deaf community. Much of what I learned in this program involved terminology that would be understandable mainly to professionals in the field of addiction. This means that I will have to find ways to bring this information down to a level where I can somehow use it to help clients (hearing and Deaf) to understand why they are addicted and why the addiction is not their fault.
