Abstract
Over the course of 3 weeks in February, the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies sponsored a series of events featuring prominent Italian theatre company Teatro delle Albe and Sicilian musicians Fratelli Mancuso. The first, "A Workshop on Voice and Text in Acting," took place on February 4th and was designed for university and HS students of Theatre and Italian who are interested in theatre as an approach to the 'stage' dimension via the actor/actress/ voice and the text 'incarnated' in a body-voice. The second event, "A Workshop on Sicilian Music Tradition Revisited," took place on February 17th and featured a variety of stories and anecdotes as well as vocal and instrumental techniques to investigate the expressiveness of traditional Sicilian songs in relation to contemporary theatre and music. The third and final event, a play-concert called "Noise in the Waters," was an intense monologue that transfigures into grotesque and melancholic poetry the tragic account of migrants adrift in the Mediterranean.
