Abstract
Hardly a day goes by without the report of a new security breach. Servers are hacked, malware infects systems, laptops are stolen, thumb drives are lost, and confidential documents find their way onto the web. Have any of these happened to you yet? Do you know what steps to take to find out what happened and limit the damage if they do? And don't forget about regulatory duties. Colleges and universities handle a diverse range of sensitive information, such as student, financial, credit card, employee, and even medical information. Mandatory reporting duties can mean that you need to quickly figure out what information was put at risk and report it. This presentation, by Brett Miller and Jonathan Mills from University of Michigan Medical School, will cover basic incident response steps, tools, team options, and walk through some example scenarios that you may encounter in academic IT support. Incident response can be a challenging and stressful undertaking. Advance preparation can make it survivable.
