Abstract
About this title: This title speculates that almost half of the world's wildlife species may become extinct in the next fifty years as a result of loss of habitat, climate change, predation by humans, and other human activities and explores what scientists are calling the “sixth great extinction” of our world's plants and animals. It suggests possible strategies for averting such a catastrophe and examines the situations of lowland gorillas in Africa and in the Bronx Zoo, grizzly bears in the Blackfoot River valley of Montana, migrating birds and wetlands habitat in the Florida everglades, and elephants in Zambia.
About the series:The programs in the Journey to Planet Earth series explore the fragile relationship between people and the world they inhabit. A common thread runs throughout all the programs: the necessity to achieve a balance between the needs of people and the needs of the environment. Topics covered in the series include the loss of farmland to urban development, the pollution of the Earth's rivers, and inadequate housing and water resources for those living in the world's mega-cities
