Abstract
About this title: Contrasts the "art for art's sake" themes of Juan Ramón Jiménez's poetry with the social and political themes expressed in the poetry of Antonio Machado. In the turmoil of the 1930's, Frederico Garcia Lorca, a poet of the avant-guarde, expressed the confusion of the times in a surrealism first expressed in "Poet in New York." Pablo Neruda is featured as the first original Latin American poet, an artist whose inspirational poems expressed his intense feelings for all aspects of humanity. In his most famous work, "Piedra de Sol" or "Sunstone," Mexican poet, Octavio Paz, expresses the grandeur of Mexican culture and its Aztec roots. Surrealism, stream of consciousness, and Aztec notions of time, are all featured in his seminal works. The episode concludes with the poetry of Argentinian, Jorge Luis Borges who used his poetry to explore themes of non-reality and human consciousness.
