Abstract
About this title: This episode focuses on the modern sentiments and intellectual themes of poetry written at the turn of the Twentieth Century. In America, Paul Laurence Dunbar's phrase "I know why the caged bird sings" has echoed throughout contemporary African American literature, while Carl Sandburg's "Chicago Poems" ushed in a new wave of realism in the portrayal of American society. In Ireland, W.B. Yeats incorporated Irish folklore and legend in his contemporary narrative voice. In 1920's America, e.e. cummings challenged every rule of style and morality in his free-flowing poem patterns. Meanwhile, Langston Hughes' poetry became the voice of the Harlem Renaissance. In England, T.S. Elliott, the greatest of the 20th Century poets, decried the emptiness in modern society.
