Abstract
About this title: In the 1930's, the English poets, Auden and Spender explored political and social themes, most noteably in their poetic tributes to those who died in the second World War. In 1950's America, Gwendolyn Brooks saw beauty in the lives of all African Americans, particularly dark-skinned women who lived courageous and spirited lives. After World War II, Welsh poet Dylan Thomas introduced a new lyricism to English poetry. His poems, plays, and lust for life, captured the hearts of a generation. Hispanic American, William Carlos Williams, incorporated America's regional dialogues and idioms in poetry that filled with profound insight and brilliant imagery. When in the 1950's and 60's, ours became a mass-media society, Beat poets such as Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, warned of the dangers of conformity. In the 21st Century, Seamus Heaney expressed the essence of Irish history and experience in poetry that echoed that of his predecessor, William Butler Yeats.
