Abstract
The First Amendment does not protect all forms of speech. Obscenity, child pornography, fighting words, true threats, slander, libel, perjury, and blackmail are just a few of the commonly recognized exceptions to the First Amendment. One of the most interesting issues in modern First Amendment law is whether the Supreme Court will recognize new exceptions to the First Amendment. United States v Stevens asks the question whether images of animal cruelty were akin to child pornography for purposes of First Amendment analysis.
