Abstract
About the title: This episode of Footnotes: The Classics of Ballet is about the Nutcracker. Dancer Frank Augustyn and others begin by examining some reasons why dancers dislike The nutcracker: its weak scenario, lack of dramatic characterization, ubiquitousness at Christmastime, and the sense that it shares in the modern-day commercialization of Christmas. They argue the pros and cons of new versions of the ballet, many of which attempt to give psychological relevance to the story. They conclude by acknowledging the ballet's perennial appeal, much of which derives from Tchaikovsky's score and the powerful response it creates in the dancer. Excerpts from a performance of Yuri Grigorovich's version of the ballet illustrate the discussion.
About the series: Break a leg. Conceived and hosted by internationally renowned dancer, Frank Augustyn, Footnotes sheds new light on the classics of ballet. Featuring interviews of ballet stars from around the world, choreographers and critics, we provide a new perspective and understanding of an art form that is often foreign to the average viewer.
