Abstract
About this title: With the help of computer modeling, the second episode highlights brain functions and brain organization. A human brain is dissected to reveal the anatomy of cerebellum, cerebrum, the cerebral cortex, white matter, the corpus callosum, and the spinal cord. MRI photographs highlight the functions of these brain parts while brain models show the "geography" of the brain, the position and relationship of one "brain landmark" to another. Computer animation is used to illustrate cortical and subcortical areas of the brain as the function of each area is described. The section on Primary Brain Systems highlights brain maps relating human actions and thoughts, voluntary and involutary, to various parts of the brain. The maps include illustrations of the peripheral, automatic, and somatic nervous systems. The engineering of excitatory and inhibatory neurotransmitters within the nervous systems are also illustrated. This section touches on diseases of the sympathetic nervous system, such as hypertension (high blood pressure). The section on "Wiring the Brain" chronicles the development of myelin transmitters in the first two years of life, and observations of brain messages that occur in the fully functioning adult brain (the Human Connectome Project).
