Abstract
About this title: This episode focuses on the geopolitics and economic issues associated with further development of America's energy resources. It traces the history of America's oil industry, the geopolitics of oil production during the 70's, the discovery of natural gas deposits in the U.S, and the fracking revolution that has made the U.S. the world's biggest oil and gas producer. The economic effects of this revolution have resulted in increased jobs in the oil industry and in supporting industries such as the production of proppants. Gradually coal-fired power plants are being replaced by natural gas; tanker trucks are being converted to natural gas, and America's carbon footprint is being reduced. The section on "concerns" traces the negative effects of developing energy resources, from cutting down forests to the production of carbon emissions. It summarizes the environmental concerns being expressed about fracking. In the final section, experts explain that the oil industry has always been involved in geopolitics and will continue to be so in the future. They raise the possibility that America will continue to import heavy oil since its refineries are not designed to process the light oil that results from fracking. The ultimate effects of this latest "boom" in energy production, remain to be seen.
