Whole Class Laboratory
Abstract
By pooling data, non-systematic uncertainties in measurement can average out, and the underlying functional relationships can stand out more clearly. Students can observe the validity of the physics laws under a wider range of conditions and with different equipment. A cluster of data points gives a better sense of the magnitude of noise and uncertainty in a measurement. With a small amount of extra effort (just typing data onto an online spreadsheet, where a new entry is automatically incorporated to update a plot), students are participating in a class-wide collaboration. Because their data becomes more public, students may also feel a sense of healthy competition and be inclined to do the experiments more carefully and accurately.
