Using the Raspberry Pi and Scratch to Teach Coding in the HCCC Library
Abstract
This presentation will show how Devlyn Courtier of the Hudson County Community College Library used the Raspberry Pi computer and Scratch software to teach a series of coding workshops in the Fall 2015 semester.

Specifically, this presentation will show how HCCC staff used Scratch to teach students, faculty, and staff about the core principles of computer science, and how to create fully functional programs in minutes, without encountering the roadblocks beginners typically encounter.

It will demonstrate what Scratch is and how to use it, then explain why the HCCC Library chose this approach, which evolved from the Library’s experience hosting coding workshops in previous years. These workshops, taught by John DeLooper and others used the Intel Galileo, an Arduino device that used a command line interface. Feedback from attendees of the Galileo workshops showed that the Galileo appeared to be too difficult for students to grasp in workshop format, and was not the best solution for coding.
